Position Summary

The coder performs daily coding of one or more of the following records: Inpatient and Acute Inpatient Rehab Records under the direction of the Coding Manager.  He/She will work closely with physicians and their office staff to obtain correct documentation for coding.  Monitors billhold reports daily to assure records are coded in a timely manner.  Reviews records for quality.

Education/Other Qualifications

  • Individual must have experience with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding, abstracting, DRG logic and quality assurance. 
  • Must have the ability to interpret a variety of handwritten data. 
  • Must have concern for detail and be able to work quickly and accurately. 
  • Must be able to solve problems and deal with conflict, especially in stressful situations. 
  • At least two years experience in an acute care facility with RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS preferred.

Coding Responsibilities

    1. Applies ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes as appropriate with the aid of 3M 360 Encoder.
    1. Sequences diagnoses and procedures based on correct coding guidelines and Coding Clinic.
    1. Monitors billhold reports in a daily basis to ensure that all records are received and coded in a timely manner. 
    1. Codes IP, Acute IP Rehab under the direction of the Coding Manager.
    1. Queries physicians for documentation required for accurate coding.
    1. Attends at least 10 hours of continuing education annually.
    1. Communicates to administrative and professional staff the appropriate policies and regulations necessary for compliance issues.
    1. Abstracts pertinent information from the patient record for data entry.
    1. Assures accuracy of all information entered.
    1. Disposition codes entered and checked routinely.
    1. Identifies system problems and reports them promptly to the Coding Manager and other appropriate personnel.
    1. Works billing edits from Business Office.
    1. Completes and sends Peer Review forms in accordance to policy/procedure.
